Music stays with us – sometimes for a lifetime.

Music has been part of Oberlin for many years and is an important part of who we are. At our music school, we want children to develop a relationship with music that is built on enjoyment, confidence and personal growth.

Our teaching is inspired by the principles of Shinichi Suzuki's Mother Tongue Method: children learn music in much the same way they learn their first language – by listening, imitating, repeating and being gently guided along the way.

The focus is not on how quickly a child can play a particular piece. Every child develops at their own pace. We listen carefully, recognise strengths, encourage and find the next step together.

Because our music school is closely connected with our kindergarten and primary school, music can become a natural part of everyday life at Oberlin. Children can begin discovering instruments from kindergarten age and integrate instrumental lessons into their day.

Music requires concentration and perseverance, but it also brings creativity, expression and joy. Children discover that practice makes a difference and that many small steps can eventually become something they are proud of.

Our greatest wish is not that every child becomes a musician. It is that music becomes something positive they can carry with them – perhaps for the rest of their lives.
