Introduction/specifics

The Backnang forest kindergarten is located in the Plattenwald, a local recreation area north of Backnang. The core area covers approximately 10,000 square meters (100 ares) and is situated near the forest playground. Within this core area, the children are free to move about and explore nature independently. Outside the core area, the group can use the forest paths and hiking trails.

The "Maisennest" site and the kindergarten's "Maisennest" cabin are located near the Plattenwald playground. The cabin serves as the kindergarten's central hub; it provides shelter during heavy rain or cold weather and—thanks to its stoves—offers a warm place in winter for shared snacks and organized activities.

Basics

The educational work at the forest kindergarten ‘Meisennest’ is based on the six areas of education and development of the orientation plan and combines them with the special opportunities offered by the natural environment. A central focus is placed on the direct experience and exploration of nature. Children observe animals and plants, ask questions and deal with natural phenomena. The promotion of movement is also a major priority, as the forest provides a wide range of opportunities to develop gross and fine motor skills and to gain confidence. Other priorities include free play, creative activities using natural materials, music and language, and the development of a sense of community.

The image of the child is based on the idea of an active, independent and curious child. Children are seen as empathetic, creative and imaginative, as children who have their own ways of expressing themselves and actively shape their environment. They should be given the opportunity to test their own limits, to act independently and to resolve conflicts as autonomously as possible. At the same time, they need a reliable framework for action, rituals, and orientation and security. The educational staff see themselves as companions and supporters who respect the individual learning path and the child’s own pace. The interests and impulses of the children are taken into account and can become topics for the group.

The educational partnership is based on a willingness to engage in dialogue and a respectful attitude towards the respective skills of parents and educational staff. Parents are seen as experts on their child’s family life. The exchange of information takes place through door-to-door conversations, parent-teacher meetings, parent evenings, letters to parents and joint celebrations. In addition, parents can contribute their own ideas, participate in activities and help shape the kindergarten day through the parent council.
